How To Recreate 2020 Makeup Trends
I RECENTLY had lunch with my friends from Benefit Cosmetics Philippines to talk about their upcoming releases. Unfortunately, some of these releases can’t be written about yet, but they are products that many Benefit fans have loved in the past. I’m in love with one palette in particular but that is all I’m going to say.
One item I can talk about is the Brow Zings Pro Palette. Brow Zings, which consists of a brow wax and powder, was my first Benefit product. The new slim, portable eyebrow palette has four long-wear powders to fill and shade, along with three waxes to sculpt and define, two high-pigment waxes and one clear wax. It is available in two combinations: Light-Medium, which includes cool blonde to warm brown shades, and Medium-Deep, which includes warm brown to cool black-brown shades.
During the lunch, Benefit Cosmetics Philippines National Brow Artist Czari Domingo did the makeup of her favorite model Annika incorporating 2020’s top beauty trends.
Domingo is a lovely girl who has brows to die for, which is why she is bemoaning the forecast that thin brows will be on trend again after years of thick, natural-looking brows.
I’m happy that one of the trendiest brows for 2020 is structured because I’m not sure I can live through another season of thin brows. In my opinion, they can make people look old.
I like the look of a subtle lip stain, one of 2020’s top makeup trends, because it’s very low maintenance. With the right blush, it also looks very dreamy. I also like the pastel eyeliner and watercolor eyeshadow trends. They are looks I can no longer wear but they’re really lovely.
Domingo did a graphic negative space liner look on Annika using Bad Gal Bang Eye Liner in Blue, a creamy and long-wearing pencil. For the eyes, Domingo also used Bad Gal Bang Mascara.
Graphic negative space liner is an update on the classic cat eye. You’re actually creating the outline of the cat eye, except on a larger scale. You can do it subtly or in a bold way.
The look admittedly needs a bit of courage, both to create and to wear. It’s not very office-friendly. It would be perfect for a work setting where people are encouraged to be creative, like in a publication or advertising agency. But if you are not as good a makeup artist as Domingo, it could take forever to do.
Another makeup trend Domingo demonstrated for us was glossy lips. To do this, she applied a mix of Cha Cha Tint and Love Tint, and topped this with Punch Pop in Sugar Cookie.
Domingo also shared some makeup tips and tricks, the Benefit Cosmetics way:
- Don’t be afraid of color. Peach and blue look good together on morena skin.
- Mixing Benefit Boi-ing Cakeless Concealer with The POREfessional: Hydrate Primer makes concealer glide on smoothly and ensures a cake-free finish.
- If you make mistakes while doing makeup, dip a cotton tip in POREfessional to correct it.
- Keep the mirror low so you can see your eye shape.
- Glossy brows give the illusion of good health.
“Hair Love,” a story about a black father who struggles and eventually succeeds in styling his young daughter’s hair, maybe less than seven minutes long, but the overwhelming response speaks to the longevity of its impact.
The story, which once only existed in the form of a dream and a Kickstarter campaign, is now the basis of a best-selling children’s book and Oscar-nominated animated short film.
“I wanted to give kids a character that normalizes and celebrates black hair,” Matthew Cherry, a former NFL player and the writer and director of the film, told NBC News. “Black fathers get a bad rap in mainstream media, so I also wanted to show them as present and caring, versus the deadbeat dad stereotype that is often ascribed to them in film.”
The Morning Rundown
Get a head start on the morning’s top stories.
In “Hair Love,” the love Stephen shares for his daughter, Zuri, is evident in that he doesn’t give up, even though styling women’s hair is out of his comfort zone.
“I’m a mother of two black teen boys and I worry about how they’re seen and how stereotyped they are,” Karen Toliver, producer of the film, said. “There’s not a lot of movies that reflect black families in a positive light, so that’s initially why I was attracted to ‘Hair Love.’”
Black hair has often been policed, which is why Gabrielle Union, the other producer of “Hair Love,” invited DeAndre Arnold to the Oscars ceremony on Sunday. Arnold is a high school senior who was suspended and told he wouldn’t be able to walk at his own graduation ceremony unless he cut his dreadlocks.
“Media is so powerful,” Cherry said. “When you grow up and watch TV shows and movies and you don’t see yourself represented, but you see every other type of hairstyle represented, that can really affect your self-confidence.”
He added that since the short premiered in August, he has heard from children who’ve watched and identify with its premise.
“To me, that’s really been mission accomplished,” Cherry said. “But the next step is to create real-life change so that black people aren’t forced to change who they are.”
This is why Cherry advocates for the federal passing of the Creating a Respectful Workplace for Natural Hair Act, or CROWN Act, which updates the state’s anti-discrimination law so that the term “race” includes “traits historically associated with race.” California became the first state to pass the act in July, with New York following suit later that month
Shay Mitchell Admitted Makeup Is Not Her Forte, Doing A Makeup Tutorial
Shay Mitchell has shown the world her acting skills but she had yet to debut her makeup skills — until now. Often serving up some serious beauty inspo both on the red carpet and beyond, Shay has now shown off her cosmetology skills — or more, lack thereof — with a full makeup tutorial.
In a new Turn the Beat Around video posted by Cosmpolitan, Shay switched roles with her makeup artist, Ash Holm. In the vid, the Pretty Little Liars star attempted to recreate one of their favorite red-carpet looks on her MUA and, let’s just say, things didn’t go quite as planned.
Starting with the eyes, Shay took out her trusty brushes and began a confident attempt to create a “sick feline cat eye” with a “green sort of smoky eyeshadow underneath” on her MUA. This is apparently one of Ash’s favorite looks she’s done on Shay.
Shay’s determination failed to live up to her actual performance. “My hands shaking,” the actor admitted right before starting with liquid eyeliner, chalking it up to her caffeine intake. “I’ve already had a coffee, maybe two,” Shay quips.
The top eyeliner result? “I’m not mad,” Shay said. But then, she got a little heavy-handed with the bottom liner and emerald shadow. “Honestly it’s the coffee it’s not even my hand,” Shay can be heard saying.
“I heard they’re not supposed to be like, twins — but they’re not even sisters when I do them,” Shay later said, acknowledging the problem she has with eyeliner when doing her own makeup too. “They’re like two random people who don’t know each other, at all, never met.” And same, Shay. Same.
Then, came the eyelash attempt and while hilarity still ensued, they weren’t too shabby! “I’m pretty impressed with that eyelash,” Shay said of her creation. As for Ash’s lips, Shay went the most professional route to select a shade: the “eeny, meeny, miny, moe” route, of course. Though her hand was even more unsteady than earlier on, and the lip liner was pretty much everywhere!
Last but not least? Shay attempted to apply Patrick Ta’s spray highlighter — which, resulted in an f-bomb. The end result? A lopsided, heavy-handed look that, unfortunately, looked nothing like Shay’s red carpet beauty. But hey — at least they had fun, right? Overall, though, we’ll give Shay’s tutorial an A for effort!
It was an emotional evening on Wednesday at Variety’s Makeup Artistry Dinner with Armani Beauty at Sunset Tower in Los Angeles.
Rachel McAdams, Olivia Wilde, Maya Rudolph, Chloë Grace Moretz, and Alessandra Ambrosio were on hand to speak about the close relationships and bonds they have formed with their makeup artists.
The honorees included Carolina Gonzalez, Melanie Inglessis, Kayleen McAdams, Molly R. Stern, and Mai Quynh.
Moretz was only 13 years old when she began working with Quynh. She praised Quynh for helping her take risks on the red carpet while “allowing my personality to come through.”
She said makeup “could be fun, it could be frivolous and it could make you feel confident, powerful and free.”
She went on to recall suffering from cystic acne when she was 15. “Mai never once missed a beat for me,” Moretz said. “She covered it up and she never judged me and she gave me the confidence to be able to go out there and face the world and not feel self-conscious.”
Quynh was so overcome with emotion by Moretz’s remarks that she had to take a moment to compose herself before standing up to accept her award. “I am so glad I get to work with you and you trust me and you make my job so easy,” she said to Moretz.
Olivia Wilde emphasized how close she and Inglessis are, a theme that was repeated throughout the evening’s program. They first met when Wilde was doing press for 2010’s “Tron: Legacy.” “She’s a healer. It’s not makeup, it’s something deeper,” the “Booksmart” director said.
For McAdams, getting her makeup done is a family affair. Her sister Kayleen has been her makeup artist ever since ditching her bachelor’s degree in psychology for a career in cosmetology. The “Doctor Strange” star said their life in beauty began when they were junior figure skaters. Being the older sister, Rachel was the one to apply their blue eyeshadow, purple eyeliner, blush and “gobs of sparkle” for their time on the ice rink. Rachel even burned her sister’s hair with a spiral curling iron. “She was gracious about it all,” she said with a laugh.
Rachel also said of her sibling, “You are truly one of the hardest working women I have ever met and I think you get that from our dad, who shovels the snow off the driveway before it even hits the ground. You are so kind-hearted, you are fiercely loyal.”
Rachel also cracked that studios save money on her press tours because she and Kayleen share the same hotel room.
Ambrosio told Variety that she and Gonzalez first met about 20 years ago on a Bloomingdales’ advertising shoot. Since then they’ve become “best friends,” Ambrosio said. “She’s a truly amazing makeup artist. She…does it all. She’s a best friend who is always there for the ones she loves.”
A tear-eyed Gonzalez said, “I love you. I’ve seen her grow from a teenager to a strong, hard worker with an amazing work ethic.”
The evening, which included remarks from Variety’s group publisher and chief revenue officer Michelle Sobrino-Stearns, concluded with Maya Rudolph presenting to Stern. “I’ve never felt more beautiful inside and out,” the “Bridesmaids” star said. “When we leave each other, I’m nourished and that, for me, is the most beautiful thing about your work. You could really see people and you bring out their natural beauty.”
She went on to say, “It’s not just a friendship. We created this life together and we hold each other up.”
Looking around the room, Stern said, “I am so honored to be a part of this community. I am so honored to be here with all of you, ladies. So grateful.”
Free Weights Vs Machines – Which Are Better For Skinny Guys?
First, machines are not safer, especially Smith machine. Here is a great quote I found on forums from Paul Chek:
People get a pattern overload from using the Smith machine. The more fixed the object, the more likely you are to develop a pattern overload. This is due to the fact that training in a fixed pathway repetitively loads the same muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints in the same pattern, encouraging micro-trauma that eventually leads to injury.
If Johnny Lunchpail always uses a Smith machine for his bench presses, he ends up working the same fibers of the prime movers in the bench press all of the time: triceps brachii, pectoralis major, long-head of the biceps, anterior deltoids, and serratus anterior. But he can’t change the pathway, the bar will always be in the same position.
This commonly leads to chronic injury over time
This commonly leads to chronic injury over time. The weight is stabilized for you. However, the joints operate in multiple planes. Use of the Smith machine, greatly decreases stabilizer activity. That creates a problem when the trainee returns to free-weight training. When that happens, the trainee is exposed to the three-dimensional environment called real life.
Plus, when you work out with machines you lift more weight and you seem to be stronger. But you aren’t really. When the time comes to pick up the couch or push a car in real life, well, you might be surprised..and not in a pleasant way. Not to mention that we as skinny guys already are a bit weaker than others (it sucks but we have to accept this fact and bust our asses to get stronger).
So, a second point against machines is that they don’t include the stabilizer muscles in training and that’s why you can lift more and you are not as strong as you could be if you trained with free weights!
So, the reasons why free weights RULE are:
1. Stabilizer muscles trained, this means more strength, better balance in real life
2. More muscle microtrauma, this means better gains because your body is challenged by the exercises better
3. Best exercises like squats, deadlifts, overhead presses, barbell rows, bench press are done with free weights
4. Allow more variations in the range of motion
But, this doesn’t mean you can’t use machines at all.. not necessarily. Adding leg press to squatting, lunges and straight-leg deadlifts are good. They give your quads a good workout. But this is just an additional exercise and no way it should replace the free weight exercises.
So definitely choose free weights over machines when possible. This will help you grow bigger and stronger and get that beach body faster!
